Finding Your Style

Finding Your Style and Reflecting It In Your New Home

Building a new home from scratch can be exciting, scary, daunting and frustrating all at the same time, especially when there are so many styles to choose from! Nowadays there is modern, industrial, boho, transitional, contemporary, farmhouse… modern farmhouse….boho farmhouse….. modern boho farmhouse…… you get my point! Not to mention how styles and personal preferences are always changing. Building your new home should be exciting and fun, but with many decisions being “final” (or expensive to change) its important you get it right the first time, so do the research and start early!

BACKSTORY- Our current home is 3 years old and recently had to be gutted due to a fire on the end of our garage in which, long story short, the whole house required gutting down to the studs due to smoke damage. Although everyone was alright it has been a challenge just dealing with the emotional piece of putting our lives and our home back together. looking at the bright side of things, it is not often you get to take the same canvas and try something new, which made me very excited!! I LOVE our home and I am very proud of it but after being there for 3 years and helping to style other peoples homes, it has been kinda fun to switch things up a bit and try something new and daring!

Finding your personal style takes time and research, I think my personal style is a mix between farmhouse, boho and industrial, as well as feminine and masculine touches. I love the softness of farmhouse mixed with the natural materials of boho detail and topped of with some metals to sharpen things up a bit. So first thing I do when deciding on finishes is to scour the internet, pinterest, instagram, etc.. for inspiration! I try to go room by room scrolling to find things that bring me joy (haha) or just make me stop to look for minute. Then I save it and keeeeeping scrolling… Once compiled I start to pick out what I actually liked about the photo (this may take days or weeks .:eye roll:. I tend to look back several times and see if I still enjoy it, delete some and some, then add back the ones I deleted. You may need to start with a couch or bed linens you already have and build your room from there. Once you narrow down some photos then you can start picking out/souring the internet again for each element of the room- lighting, wall color, trim, flooring, carpet, storage. I could go on and on about storage, this could be my next blog. So first start researching!

Design Style Keywords to Search- Farmhouse, Rustic, Eclectic, Contemporary, Transitional, Boho, Modern, Minimalist, Industrial, Mid Century Modern, Chabby Chic, Coastal, Hollywood Glam, the list is endless!

FOR EXAMPLE- In my new bathroom I was pretty sure I wanted subway tile, so I went from white to colored and then back to white. Then to jazz it up decided on herringbone for the back wall. And for me because we have hard water, dark grout… Here are some of my pictures that brought me joy!
